My Students
As the music teacher of the only non-audition based music school in New York City, I strive to give my students every opportunity. Our school was opened less than 15 years ago with the mission to give all students, regardless of their prior knowledge, an opportunity to learn and grow in the arts.
Over 95% of the students are of black or Hispanic heritage, and over 85% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.
Although many of our students' math and reading skills fall below grade level, they are intelligent, passionate, and all performers at heart.
My Project
Nutrition education is an important part of growing that includes learning to cook and prepare foods. Our school is very blessed to have a cooking program in full swing for the second year in a row! Unfortunately, the kitchen we used to use is no longer available to us, and we have had to relocate into the chemistry lab, the only room with sinks.
Our cooking program has doubled in size from last year, but without a kitchen to use, we have found ourselves short on "stovetop" space.
Your donation of hot plates will allow us to create smaller groups ensuring each student is able to participate in a more active way, maximizing the learning taking place! The space is used as a classroom during the day, and these cleaning supplies will help us in our effort each week as we prep the space to the standards acceptable for food preparation, and then again at the end as we return the space to a classroom with no trace of food. Students will be developing some awesome standards for cleaning through this process! We are so excited to continue to grow this program and your donation helps us on our way!
