My students are a group of the most wonderful young adults diagnosed with intellectual/developmental disabilities/Autism you will ever meet. They live life to the fullest. They range in age from 14 to 20 and can stay with me until 21 years old. We are located in what is a high poverty high school and more than half the students come from low income homes.
They enjoy learning and greet each day with a smile and positive attitude.
They love taking part in all that high school has to offer and make friends wherever they go. My students tackle their classwork much like they tackle life, all in with a positive attitude. They enjoy being at school and learning new skills.
My Project
Helping my students remain healthy and clean is vital to their success in school and in life. There are times that families do not have the resources to wash clothes at home, so with the funding of this project my students can bring their clothes to school and wash/dry them in the classroom laundry area. This also teaches my students life skills and meets IEP goals of measuring detergent for washing clothes. The rolling cart laundry basket will help students with physical limitations be able to move the laundry from the classroom to the laundry area. The disinfectant wipes will not only allow for clean up a the end of the day and after toilet use, but also before and after food prep during life skills lessons. Students are taught daily the importance of keeping a clean environment.
Keeping my classroom disinfected also helps prevent the spreading of illnesses which happens so easily in schools.
The district does not provide cleaning supplies and we are forced to rely on after-hours cleaning crews. My students also enjoy keeping their classroom clean and have cleaning duties at the end of each day. The cleaning and hygiene skills students learn at school can generalize to the home environment and help with activities at home.
My students will use the personal hygiene products to keep fresh and clean throughout the school day. IEP goals of being job ready, brushing teeth and using deodorant will also be met by each student having proper hygiene supplies. The students can keep toiletry kits in their cubbies to remain fresh all day as well as on their way home.
