Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We're keeping chemistry clean! As a summary unit for acid/base interaction, saponification, functional groups, and stoichiometry, my students are making their own soap and analyzing the process to identify multiple chemical interactions.

My students are wonderful.

I am a first year chemistry/physics/life science teacher and they welcomed me to their school with respect, camaraderie, and a huge hunger for learning. Our school consists of about 700 students in a small town in northern California. I'm in the process of increasing the available science materials to bring us up to par with school districts in the surrounding area. Keep Chemistry Clean is one of many benchmark labs that I am planning to keep my students engaged while they combine multiple chemical concepts into one inquiry based lab investigation.

My Project

We need coconut oil, essential oils, silicone molds, and Scientific Soap Making reference text for our lab. This lab will consist of several days and several stages of soap making. We start by making a hot base solution of sodium hydroxide and water. Our fats are melted down and our essential oils measured out. Now we make soap! The students add their tempered base solution to their melted oils and the observations begin. The students stir the soap manually, looking for several different changes in the appearance. After the soap is finished, we pour it into molds and cure it for several weeks to let the reaction go to completion, testing the pH at set intervals. After the soap is complete, the students can take home their homemade soap and tell their families exactly how chemistry keeps things clean!

Historically, chemistry has been a weak point in the curriculum at our high school.

I plan to transform this low expectation of chemistry by creating engaging, functional, and practical ways for my students to embrace science as an every day skill needed to succeed in the increasingly technological world they live in. Students graduating from this chemistry program will now have the skills to pursue a college degree in science.
