Help me give my students the opportunity to learn in a clean, safe environment, while getting their sensory needs met. These new bean bag chairs fit these needs.
I teach students with significant cognitive disabilities. Our three classrooms can have a total of 40 students on any given day. COVID caused us to pause and reflect on what is truly important and safe for our students. As the team leader for three classrooms of students with various disabilities, I worked with my teams to find ways to keep our students safe. Many of our kiddos has special sensory needs. This population of students is also more prone to illness. Keeping students happy, educated and well becomes a challenge. Our students, like any other group of students, deserves as much opportunity to engage in learning as anyone else. Bean bag chairs help with these needs, yet our bean bags are falling apart, leaking beans and probably not as clean as they once were.
My Project
Many of our students have high sensory needs, which can get in the way of learning. Bean bag chairs reduce sensory stress, while allowing the student to focus on academic and/or social emotional learning. Sensory stress can look aggressive or be loud with cries and screams. By reducing these outbursts, other students in the classroom benefit as well. Also, we also do a great deal of art to help with social and emotional stress. We use permanent markers during art with our regular education buddies. So we go through markers very quickly.
