My Students
As the music teacher of the only non-audition based music school in New York City, I strive to give my students every opportunity. Our school was opened less than 15 years ago with the mission to give all students, regardless of their prior knowledge, an opportunity to learn and grow in the arts.
Over 95% of the students are of black or Hispanic heritage, and over 85% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.
Although many of our students' math and reading skills fall below grade level, they are intelligent, passionate, and all performers at heart.
My Project
Holidays can often be challenging for teens, especially those who don't have a home to call their own. Many of our students are living in shelters or other forms of temporary housing, and a check in with them revealed that what they want for the holidays this year are undergarments and personal hygiene items.
For students living in temporary housing or shelters, clean clothes may be a struggle.
By having detergent at school to clean clothes students will feel less self conscious, and according to multiple studies, having programs that allow students to wash their clothes at school can increase attendance significantly! We will also be able to make "detergent pouches" for students who have access to washers and dryers, but lack the soap for cleaning.
No child should have to worry about having clean underwear or protection from their body's natural functions. To hear my students tell me they are in need of these items breaks my heart. Being able to provide these items, and a way to keep them clean for students will be life-altering for some of them. It will mean increased attendance, increased confidence, and a sense of pride in who they are. Together, we can provide that to these students. Thank you so much for your willingness to help!
