it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
We are students at a title one high school in LIC, NYC. We are a mostly 9th graders studying ELA but there is also an 11th grade advisory and a senior ELA class that uses the same classroom. Leigh is our teacher and we love that she cares so much about our comfort in the classroom. We have yoga balls to sit on, standing desks in the back of the room, and we all work to have a clean and bright space to work and learn.
Our school focuses on television and film production so we are often in little groups working on scripts or determining the best lighting and camera angles for our shoots. The students in our school are from all over NYC, some travel on a bus, boat, and subway for over 90 minutes one way just to get here! We are dedicated to our school and our education.
Have you learned about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs? We know that we cannot reach our full potential if our most basic needs are not taken care of. In school our basic needs are to be comfortable and have a clean learning space. Some of us are not comfortable in our chairs and would love to be able to settle into a comfortable beanbag chair so we can engage in independent reading assignments, or small group projects. Some of us have trouble focusing so we would benefit from aromatherapy and fidget toys to keep our hands busy so our minds can focus on school work. We would also like to get a broom and dustpan so we can sweep up any messes that we make! Sometimes seeing a mess can distract us from doing our work, or keep us from sitting on the floor if we're more comfortable there than in a chair.

We know that if a lot of people pitch in and do a little they can achieve a big goal. We are trying to get this project funded for two reasons. Reason number one is to have the items we feel we need to succeed, and reason number two is to know that we are part of a community who supports us and our future. We are a class of students who look to be future entertainers, parents, lawyers, business people, and teachers. We are going to give back to you when we graduate from college, but right now we need your help.

We know that we need to start projects for community service projects hours for our National Honor Society memberships, college applications, and we also want to give back to our peers at school. By leading this project we are getting experience that will serve us well in college and in our professions later on.

Our ELA teacher ran a campaign to raise funds for our classroom over the summer. We love our alternative seating (we have risers to create standing desks and yoga balls for our chairs) and want to expand it to the next level. We already started a class donation system where we are collecting change to help fund this project. We want to have everyone's needs included in our inclusive classroom and we feel that by getting the items for our project, we can achieve that!
