My students need a digital camera and craft items such as clay and other materials to produce a claymation animation from a familiar children's book.

My Students
21st Century students are highly motivated by the digital world around them and without access to the tools to create, the possibilities are always limited. We have grade level flip cameras but it is hard to use them as often as we would like to and they do not capture still photographs.
The students in my fourth grade class are highly motivated by the technology offered in this digital age.
They are highly motivated when working on the computers and completing tasks that require digital response. Each classroom in our school is equipped with a Promethean board which is highly motivating as students interact with it daily. My students have benefited greatly from hands on experiences where they are able to plan, revise, and trouble shoot along the way. Located in the heart of the city, as a Title 1 school, we serve a diverse minority population. Many of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches so resources such as those being requested are often limited in their homes or in high demand for classroom use in our school setting.
My Project
A digital camera clay, and other craft items are essential to make a stop motion animation film. By providing the resources requested, students will work collaboratively to create a Claymation stop motion animation in response to a book they have read. The process of Claymation is one in which students have to work collaboratively to make a video production. Students will plan a story board, create clay figures for animation, create a background for each scene that will be shot, shoot each scene, and use computer software to organize shots to "retell" the story. Students will have to work in small groups and negotiate in order to make decisions, students will be able to use their artistic abilities to make the characters and backgrounds. Students will also learn to edit and organize in order to effectively make the story come to life. Students will have a opportunity learn what happens behind the scenes of a video production.
An opportunity such as this will allow students an authentic opportunity to use skills that are often only used in isolation.
It will foster a desire to explore career opportunities that exist which use technology.
