This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is an urban public school, in an old building with high need students, that is working hard to promote college readiness to all of our students. I teach the ceramics program to 9th - 12th grade students.
Our school district is in a desperate situation with a budget which will not allow the purchase of more supplies. However, I do have five classes of thirty motivated students who are rich with ideas and creativity who need more clay.
Without more clay we will not be able to finish the year doing ceramics. The creative ideas are really flowing as students are becoming confident in their skills. More students are throwing on the wheel and many are becoming interested in sculpting in addition to hand-building projects. To run out of clay would be a disappointing situation for the students as well as myself.
Working with clay helps in developing decision making skills, creativity, and enhances much of what is learned in other academic classes. This class is also a time to learn to work together cooperatively in a studio environment and develop social skills while learning.
