My Project

With your help, this grant would provide the clay, some select glazes, and sculpting tools to get our ceramics program up and running!

My school is very diverse.

It has a mixture of some students from all over the world but mostly students/families that have been pocketed in a fairly isolated community in Marin County. The vast majority are of color, are extremely disadvantaged, and have social/emotional needs. This is particularly challenging for them as the neighboring communities (a matter of less than 5 miles) are quite the opposite. AND, our school merges with these neighboring communities for high school.

My students are children with big stories and more than their fair share of trauma. As the art teacher, I strive to provide them with a wealth of opportunities and experiences to help them find some healing and relief through creativity. I have found that projects providing strong kinesthetic feedback are exceptional at this; particularly clay. When I get clay in their hands they calm and settle.

My program focuses on the process of art, rather than the product. Clay is perfect for this as they can spend endless amounts of time forming and reforming their creative ideas without the pressure of a final piece. And, when they do create something they want to keep, all the better!

We have been donated a beautiful kiln, but have no supplies with which to use it. We would love to get our ceramics program up and running!

Thank you ever so much for your consideration!
