Clay Creation Representing a Modern Take on Classical Literature Pieces
Help me give my students the necessary clay and paint supplies to complete a large unit for sustained investigation into clay modeling. These clay creations will be based on their favorite classical literature.
Consider this project as a dialogue between the written word and the sculpted form. My students will choose a classical literary piece that resonates with them, one whose characters and themes can be reimagined in a way that reflects the complexities of our world today. Examples will be the mythical adventures of Odysseus, the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet, or the political intrigue of Shakespearean dramas. Narratives must offer solid grounds for artistic exploration.
Our task will be to breathe new life into age-old stories, to reinterpret them through the lens of our modern consciousness.
My goal is to support my learners while they channel the spirit of innovation and attempt to infuse their creations with the essence of contemporary thought, societal reflections, and personal expressions. Through the manipulation of clay, we bridge the gap between the classical and the now, transforming literary tales into tangible, three-dimensional artworks that speak to our present experiences.
My students come from a lower income rural community once supported by copper mines and logging industries. While these income producers have long since left, these families have persevered to continue raising families here. Our High School has not had funding for a designated art program in 10 years so this is the launch of something special. So far I have invested every dollar of my income and much of my savings into supporting the course supplies. It would be amazing if I could show them that the broad reach of kindness extends beyond their little village in the Upper Peninsula.
