Clay Art and Fundraising Jewelry

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Handmade jewelry is great for making gifts and for creating traditional art. We don't have the resources to have a traditional ceramics program. My students are low-income, gang-impacted, new immigrant, first in their family to go to college aspirants.

I work with all of the 9th graders; they are vivacious, hormonally challenged and super creative!

For some of my students, this is the first time that they are working with clay. They have the skill level of a grade school kid but they are very inspired. Because our little charter school is new, we need to build our art program slowly.

My Project

We need clay that doesn't need to be fired. We don't have a kiln or the facilities to have one. Air dry clay is versatile and easy to use. Clay is a grounding medium, in our over-technical world it is nice to touch some earth! My students need self-drying clay to sculpt, mold and create 3D art without the need of a kiln. We also need pliers, wire and varnish to create handmade jewelry. We have plenty of clay tools (thanks to donorschoose!) and we have plenty of talent!

Our little charter school had to cut the, already tiny, art budget by 20% so it is a challenge to serve the students well.

An art program without materials is like a cooking class without food.
