My students need two digital cameras with two 2GB memory cards and two mini-tripods for their clay animation project.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Lee's classroom raised $550
This project is fully funded
I teach 2nd grade in a very small inner city school in California, where 91% of the students participate in the free lunch program and 48% are English as a Second Language learners. Since the school is small, so is the budget that the school gets.
It has been a challenge to introduce digital technology to my class because of our limited resources. Our students have not had the opportunity to use a digital camera for their projects because there is only one digital camera for our school of 300 students.
The students use the digital cameras and tripods to create clay characters and develop their own clay animation story based on one short folk tale, fantasy or nonfiction stories from their Language Arts reading book.
First the students group into 4 to 5 students. Next, the students read various genre stories from their reading book. Then they determine which short story they would like to retell making clay characters. Next they use a Storyboard to map out the contents and direction of the project. Using this storyboard to show what happens on each page of the story. After the students are done with the storyboards, it is followed with discussions within the group and the other groups of any suggestions they may have to improve their story. Then, they work with the teacher for her suggestions. Followed by each group deciding what background(s) they would draw for their story.
They will use the digital camera to take pictures of their clay characters using stop motions in retelling their short story. Using a software called Frames they will develop their clay animation story. Here the children will add title and text if needed. They will add voice over and music to their animation movie. Then save it on Quick Time as a movie. They will present this to their parents and peers at our end of the year “Culmination of Learning”.
I hope to close the achievement gap, raise self-esteem and teach media technology to all my students. I truly believe even the most reluctant reader and writer would get excited about creating something they can call their own. This project would build their confidence as writers, improve their reading fluency and read in a manner approximating natural speech.
We need two digital cameras and two mini tripods.
Please consider donating money for the cameras and mini tripods.
Your donation would make it possible for the students to find more ownership of this project because they created it. I can assure you that the investment you make, all the students in my class will be active participants in using this technology to develop their oral language and reading skills.
