Classroom Transformations for Real-World Experiences During COVID

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am lucky enough to work with students with significant and complex disabilities across three different classrooms. The entire goal of our programs is to identify and pursue those skills that are the most meaningful to our students and will build their independent living and job skills after school.
With creativity, support, and patience, any student in our programs is able to grow their skills to communicate their needs, wants, and independence.
My students split their day between self-contained classes to focus on functional academics and life skills, as well as inclusive classes to build their social skills. We have a wide range of physical and communicative needs in our classrooms, and we are always willing to try new techniques and technology when looking for the best ways to support our students.
My Project
I primarily work with self-contained students at the middle school level (ages 11-14). These AMAZING students are working on building functional communication and life skills that will support their independence and potential job skills after they graduate from school.
Over the past 8 years working with these students, I know how much they benefit from having real-world and community experiences built into their programs for lasting learning and connections.
Unfortunately, due to the continued COVID pandemic, we are no longer able to go out into the community for field trips. Last year, I was able to transform my classroom at the end of the year into a camping scene. Students were able to problem-solve, "buy" camping materials in our store, and work in groups with their peers.
My goal for this year is to have a classroom transformation once a quarter that would be able to imitate our community outings during a regular year. Supplies are needed to create a store environment where students can role-play as both employees and customers. Students will practice pragmatic/social rules for these scenarios; effectively using functional communication skills; planning their shopping lists; managing a budget; following directions for recipes, and working with peers to complete group activities.
The items included in this DonorsChoose project will be used to either create or stock our quarterly store environments for students to use while practicing these functional skills.
