Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are curious 5th graders who are excited about this years math experience. Many of my students lack the technology experiences that many of their peers are exposed to daily. Their desire to learn using technology is evident, yet the technology to make this happen is not readily available. My students have been known to work hard during the school year but tend to become frustrated when we need technology to complete our challenges and do not have access to what they need.

This year my hope is to transform our classroom into a LEARNING ENVIRONMENT!!

This transformation will be the foundation for Project Based Learning throughout the year. The first step is to transform our classroom. We will need flexible and non traditional seating for this to happen.

Most of my students live in high poverty. A full 100% of my students receive free lunch. They come from many different ethnicities and backgrounds. They are learning to work in cooperative groups. Imagine the possibilities if they could learn in a comfortable setting. Lounge chairs, sitting at high top and low top tables like the comforts of home or out at a restaurant.

My Project

My project will transform our current classroom to an inviting learning environment. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. When working in cooperative groups on projects students can decide the type of space that will work best for them. Last year my students worked many times in the floor because space at a desk is limited. Often times students would work in their cooperative groups after school at the library and tell me it is easier to work at tables. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. I ultimately want to give them additional options with the hopes of awaken their creativity, their ability to discover a love for learning. Choices will give them the control of their learning environment while fostering social harmony.
