This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are hard-working, passionate, and resilient young people who live in East Oakland. Despite facing a deluge of obstacles including poverty, homelessness, learning English, drugs, and violence, my students come to school each day excited to be a part of our school community. In our class, students are engaged in activities that help them to envision and build a better future for themselves and their community. Even though there are many systems in place working to lock my students into a cycle of failure, they continually bounce back by working hard to overcome the challenges they face.

My students get most excited about doing experiments and solving real world problems with their science knowledge.

Their favorite activities from last year included making a solar-powered water purification device, designing a cold pack that could be used during wildfire evacuations, and creating the perfect DIY slime recipe.

My Project

The headphones and document camera that I am requesting will help take my students' science skills to the next level. In science, students rely on and apply skills from all disciplines. However, my students' skills in reading, writing, and math can range from the 2nd grade to the 9th grade in just one class. Therefore, it's challenging for me as their teacher to make sure I'm consistently supporting all students below grade level while also pushing students who need more advanced work.

These supplies will support my students to work independently as they explore new scientific concepts and get extra visual support during lessons.

For example, there are many simulators, activities, and videos online that students can use to learn about science concepts. By using headphones, students can fully engage in those activities rather than having to mute the volume so as to not disturb other students who are doing a different activity. Last year, I received some headphones to support my students, but I didn't get enough for the entire class. Since students love being able to focus as they use the headphones, I am hoping to get enough headphones for all students.

Additionally, I rely on using a document camera during instruction to support visual learners in my classroom. Unfortunately, the document camera I had been using for four years broke at the end of last year. Using a document camera is essential to my teaching because I'm able to easily show students how and where to write their ideas down during experiments. Also, students love to come to the front of the room and use the document camera to show their work on the board. They love to see their own fingers on the big screen as they show their classmates how they arrived at their answer.
