This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know what it really takes for students to take ownership of their education? At the root of any successful, high-interest lesson is creativity. In order to capture the imagination of students you need the right supplies.

My students are sixth grade elementary students at an inner city school.

They are eager to learn but many come from homes that lack resources to allow them to be creative. Believe it or not, some come to school without a notebook or pencil to their name. They rely on me to supply these materials. For some students, school is their only opportunity to make use of art supplies. In the past, I have had students ask to take paper home and they've returned with beautiful pictures they are eager to give me.

My Project

Ask any teacher the secret behind a successful lesson and they will tell you student interest. Creative, fun, and artistic activities keep students engaged. They need to cut, glue, paint and color to show what they know. Post-its are versatile material that we frequently use for jotting notes while reading, answering math questions, or even as place-markers for struggling readers. Students also love to type and create files on the classroom computers, but many times are not allowed to print because lack of ink. Learning should be a fun experience, help my students get the supplies they need to explore their creative side!

This project will improve the student interest level in my classroom.

Lessons centered around their creativity will provide more opportunity to create personal connections to the curriculum. Hopefully I can encourage a lifelong love of learning in my students!
