I teach some of the hardest working students in the county, but like many students, they stuggle with vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension. Any educator will tell you that these two skills are closely related.
Research shows that one way to help students increase their vocabulary is to teach morphemes, which is the smallest unit of language.
Students will use these basic classroom supplies to create personal morpheme lexicons. They can decorate the covers with stickers or doodles, and each entry will include keywords that will help them increase their vocabulary and reading comprehension. For example, one lesson might include a group of Latin prefixes that mean "not" (IN-, IM-, IL-, IR-). Another lesson could focus on the Greek root "logy," meaning "science or study of." Learning morphemes, which iclude prefixes, roots, and suffixes, will help students become better readers.
