This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day I look out into a sea of eager, inquisitive faces and say, "Good Morning boys and girls." My 30 amazing, third graders (who will be taught in two groups of 15 due to Covid safety guidelines )attend a community public school and reside in a high poverty area located in Bronx, NY. In school, they are learning to have a growth mindset and to learn how to live with empathy, flexibility, resilience, persistence, and optimism.

School is their second "home" and now they won't be able to come everyday.

With the challenges they face, they enjoy reading chapter books, writing poetry and learning about science. They also love to build things and participate in art activities.

My Project

The majority of my students will start the school year with no supplies. I want them to have the pencils, dry erase markers and pens they need to complete their writing, reading, science, social studies, and word study classwork. The students use dry erase markers to work out math problems on whiteboards.

Our reading and writing curriculum involves creating charts and tools for the students to use as resources.

Therefore, I am also requesting chart sticky pads and copy paper for the students to refer to and use in order to achieve their reading and writing goals and to practice the strategies they are learning.

Because of the pandemic, our classrooms will be set up differently. Students have to have their own separate desks with their supplies and I need pencils grips to keep track of pencils and minimize the sharing of pencils.

These resources will support my students in maintaining a high quality and quantity of classwork every day, while independently improving.

My students need these resources during the day in order to be successful in their journey to become readers and writers. From my experience, when students have the school tools they need, they feel empowered and confident to be better students. It will also give them a sense of ownership and responsibility to have their own supplies.
