My Project

Let's be honest -- math can be hard, so creating a successful support system in the math classroom is absolutely essential. Over the course of my 16-year teaching career, I've always used a binder organizational system where students keep their scaffolded notes pages, foldables, activity sheets, etc., and adding some color to notes pages is often a way to get new material to stick faster. For a 9th grader, effective notes and graphic organizers is a key to developing efficient study skills that will set them up for current and future success.

The students are absolutely wonderful kids who care about learning, and they're also dealing with the complex effects of significant poverty.

I see in them great potential to be highly successful in math and future leaders of our world. Unfortunately, some of the little things that make learning more accessible are out of reach for them. I would love to be able to provide each of my students with a high-quality binder and fill it with materials including colored markers and pens, and a zip pouch to hold them. Adding color to notes is an effective way to help new material stick and learning efficient note-taking strategies will enable them to build habits that will not just teach them math, but teach them effective ways to learn math faster and more deeply.
