Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach in a rural school district where there is a lot of poverty, and many students receive either free or reduced-price lunches. I like to provide not only educational opportunities for my students, but life lessons as well. Providing a class store promotes economic education of earning and saving "money" (tickets) through good work ethic and positive behavior. Promoting a fun and engaging learning environment allows students to learn and want to be at school daily.
Taking care of a classroom full of energetic 8-year-olds and trying to ensure that learning is taking place is no easy task.
I use a positive behavior system with tickets to help make this task a little easier. Students are rewarded tickets for being responsible, following directions, being kind to their classmates, and making good choices. The students can also lose tickets for making poor choices in the classroom and throughout our school. Throughout the week, students save their tickets in a baggie that they keep inside their desks. Every other Friday, students get to shop at our classroom store. They can choose to spend their hard-earned tickets on the lesser-priced items or save them for the higher-priced items.
