Classroom Store For Financial Literacy

My students need materials for our classroom store such as a cash drawer, play money, candy, water bottles and toys to learn about financial literacy.

My Students

My classroom is a wonderful place filled with hard working students and staff. Every day, I fall just a little bit more in love with their amazing hearts and smiles. Each child has an individual education plan to help them make progress on goals in functional academics, behavior, life skills, communication, and/or functional life skills.

My students are full of curiosity, energy, and incredible potential.

We focus on the positive and celebrate every success that they achieve. Each day I do my best to make sure that they have the necessary tools to succeed, but it takes a lot of equipment and materials to help meet their unique needs.

With the help of DonorsChoose.org, I am able to provide unique and engaging materials to help my students, who experience a variety of disabilities, overcome their challenges and let their abilities shine through.

My Project

As a middle school special education teacher I am always thinking about what skills my students need in order to be as independent and productive as possible when they grow up.

Consumer math skills are at the top of my list of skills that my special education students need in order to be financially literate and not get cheated when they make purchases.

This project will help me create a classroom student store where students will earn play money which will go into their money pouches. Each week they will count their money and keep a bank book of their savings. We'll use the coin sorters and cash drawer to identify and sort coins and bills, just like you would at a real store. Once a month they will have an opportunity to purchase items such as Legos, candy, cars, action figures, water bottles, pens, markers and fidgets (cubes, spinners), pencils, sand, action figures, bracelet kit and drawing pads. I'll use the card stock and color stickers to price our items and create a store price list. This project will make a big difference in how my students feel about learning money skills and their ability to generalize these skills to their life outside of school.
