My Students
It's time to make education come alive for my students.
Home lives can wreak havoc on the classroom, a fact that is supremely evident when I try to teach my students to carefully analyze literature.
I watch their eyes glaze over and I know I have lost them. They care more about what is on their phones than they do about literature and writing, but I want them to see the creative possibilities in both.
My Project
Using Neil Gaiman's award winning book, The Graveyard Book, we will carefully analyze the way an author can create a complex, layered plot by using literary tools. We will examine how literature can give us a voice to express our own views on social issues and we will realize how characterization helps us connect with one another as human beings.
If I can get my students to connect with literature in the same way they connect with music and movies, I will be able to give them something sorely lacking in modern education: a passion for creativity.
My ultimate goal is to help them see value in all creative pursuits, including their own. I believe The Graveyard Book is a positive step in the journey of creativity.
