Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 7th grade Science in a STEM, Title 1 School. This year we are using a curriculum that is internet based. Many of our students have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. Also, many of my students are ELL students which are aided by the program being able to allow these students to access the bilingual glossary to help them to understand the Science academic language needed to succeed in the classroom. 90% of our students are African American or Latino. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population.
Our problem is that many of our classrooms have to share IPad 2 carts so sometimes the tech we need is not available on a day to day basis and is not able to run all of the online material.
What I am looking for is to provide a classroom set of either Surface Pros or Chrome books, that would be used for only these students so they would have access to the Science curriculum everyday
My Project
With a classroom set of 33 ChromeBooks, my students will have technology available everyday that is up to date and able to run all the applications needed to achieve in my classroom. Our students will use the computers to access daily lessons, labs and assessments to access the latest information in an inquiry-based science classroom.
Right now, my students have to share iPad 2 carts with 10 other classrooms on my floor.
The iPad 2's still work although they are slow and they run most of apps in the program but not all. Students spend a lot of time reloading screens because of errors using older technology.
