My students need more flexible seating options. I plan on making the classroom a comfortable place to learn where students can choose the seating that works best for them.

My Students
I teach 3rd grade in a Title 1 school in downtown Charleston. My children surprise me every day. They are kind, inquisitive, and hilarious. Some of them are uncommonly shy, while others are blessed with boundless energy. They make the best of every bad situation and can take a day from "good" to "amazing." I teach in a high poverty elementary school. All of my students receive free/reduced lunch and free breakfast. I empathize with their circumstances and home lives.
I know how important education is to break the cycle of poverty.
I am doing my part to try to close the achievement gap for the children that aren't given as many privileges, but I cannot do it without resources.
My Project
I am so excited to expand on flexible seating this year. Last school year I was thrilled by the difference just 6 yoga balls had on the behavior and academics of my students. This project will give my students even more flexibility in their seating choices. Hopefully I can get rid of all the chairs in my classroom and just use flexible seating!
We all sit in different ways to accomplish different goals.
This wide variety of seating options will provide my students with the choice to pick the seat that works best for them and the task at hand. My students can sit on the floor, wobble on stools, or curl up in an inflatable chair.
I take the time to teach the students that these are tools, not toys. They have always respected that philosophy and know what seat to use for the task at hand. By giving them choices in how they want to learn, they are more invested in their learning. I would hate to sit on a plastic chair at a desk for hours on end, so why should they have to?
