Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My hard-working group of students with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism are ages 18-22 and remain in school to develop transition-related skills. Students in my classroom volunteer in vocational experiences with job coach support throughout our community, and participate in weekly activities of recreation and leisure together as a class. Students also have the opportunity to participate in community-based experiences to develop life skills, such as accessing public transportation, grocery shopping, etc. While the majority of our activities are community-based, our program is housed in a large high school.
During our classroom time, students learn about various life skills such as the job application process, money management, and meal preparation, amongst other skills focused on increasing their independence.
We recently received a generous donation of four activity tables to increase our collaborative and hands-on learning opportunities, but as more students enter our transition program, we are in need of more chairs to accommodate our growing classroom population. The addition of these classroom chairs will allow more flexibility in grouping my students according to their individual needs, increase collaboration in small groups, and provide comfort for my students during their classroom learning.
