Classroom Rug

My students need a rug. This rug will also help them identify letters and beginning sounds in words/pictures.

My Students

Have you ever seen a rug that supports students learning in English. This rug will help my students with recognize letters and sounds and also provide a seat for each of my students. My new school and classroom does not have a rug for my students to sit on. Just the hard cold floor.

I am currently transferring to another Kindergarten EL classroom in my school district.

Looking at the 2013-2014 students that have currently registered, I will have approximately 23-25 students. For math, this class will be divided by EL students and non EL students. My reading classroom will most likely consist of at least 20 EL students and a small handful of non EL students. English is not the first language of EL students; therefore, reading, writing, and speaking is a little more challenging for them. The school I will be transferring to is a Title One School. This means the majority, if not all, of my students will qualify for free and reduced lunch. These students are educationally at-risk and tend to need extra instructional services or activities, within the classroom, to help them make the gains needed to reach the state benchmarks.

My Project

With this special rug, I can have students identify the letters, tell me the letter sounds, name the pictures and tell me the beginning sounds for the pictures on the rug. I have an EL classroom and this rug will help reinforce learning new vocabulary as well as the alphabetic principle. I can also have students do various activities with and on this rug. We spend time at the rug learning different concepts as well as sharing student work. It's a great place to share ideas and learn. My students enjoy coming to the rug. At the rug, we read, share stories, and learn different concepts. We also form circles and have students talk about and prove math concepts taught.
