My students need a classroom carpet for morning meeting, closing circle, read aloud times, and a variety of other opportunities throughout the school day.
My favorite quote is "There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why... I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?" by Robert F. Kennedy. This is my favorite quote because it is important to always strive to not focus on the negatives but instead how they can be fixed.
My students are passionate about learning and life; they are tenacious and are hardworking.
While I have worked with over a hundred different students in my life, this group inspires me every day. I hear so many stories from my students, which could easily bring them down. However, they demonstrate grit and perseverance through these hard times. My students, even at the young age of six and seven, understand the importance of school and where education can take them in this world.
The students at my school are a hundred percent African American and Latino. Ninety-six percent of the students are considered low income. My school strongly believes in a school community. There are multiple times throughout the week where we focus on school culture and school-wide events. There are three guiding principles of the school: safety, responsibility, and respect. Our students learn what it means to demonstrate and bring these principles into their own lives.
My Project
A classroom rug is invaluable to an elementary classroom. One of the most important parts of a school day would occur on this carpet: morning meeting. This is a time when all of the students and myself would gather to start the morning off right. While some of my students might be coming from having a fight with a parent or getting in trouble with a grandparent, this space would create a time for students to ground themselves and focus on the school day. Not only would we discuss the weather, the day, and a variety of other things, we would also focus on having a learning and growth mindset.
In addition to morning meeting, a plethora of instructional activities will occur on the carpet. During reading, students will become more invested in read aloud and independent reading if in a comfortable space. During math instruction, students can gather in a circle and we can use manipulatives as a class to learn about different concepts. There is no time in the day that cannot occur on a rug.
A classroom rug has the ability to create a warm and welcoming classroom for my students.
While my students are encouraged to find themselves in my classroom, a rug would enhance our ability to bring the class together. We can build a sense of classroom community and culture all through having a space where the students and myself are at eye level and focused on the day of learning. I know that a classroom rug will bring my whole class together as collaborative members of a community.
