Classroom Refresh: A Clean, Safe, and Creative Space for Students

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The art materials and storage bins will help me to provide my students with opportunities to be creative and maintain an organized classroom. The markers and colored pencils will help students complete art projects and classroom assignments throughout the school year. Being that my students come from predominantly low-income households, it’s essential to have supplies available for my students in the classroom.
A classroom carpet is a safe space where learning grows, curiosity is ignited, and where community is cultivated.
The current classroom carpet is old, shaggy, a solid color, and can never be fully cleaned because of how matted it is. There are no designated spaces for students to sit on the carpet. A new carpet would make the world of a difference in the classroom. It will give students a clean and safe space to learn.
The Feeling Spot book set would be perfect for my English language learners- the visual nature of this series of books will help students identify their feelings and learn how to manage them. I usually use YouTube videos of these books; it would be incredible for the students to have access to physical copies. The display bookshelf would make the perfect home in the classroom library for students to utilize the Feeling Spot books and any other classroom books.
I teach in California in a Dual-Language English-Spanish program. I will have about 60 2nd graders this upcoming school year. The majority of my students are first-generation immigrants/students and are English language learners. Working within this community is my passion. I’ve been a substitute teacher for two years and am over the moon to be able to teach full-time, for the first time ever, this upcoming school year.
