My Students
Ever dreamed of becoming the next Edward R. Murrow or Ira Glass? I want to provide my students, with the experience of writing and creating radio broadcasts, that we can actually air in our hometown of Richmond, VA
My school is an urban, middle school in central Virginia.
The students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. The students in my classroom are IB (international baccalaureate) and are eager learners, who demand a great amount of engagement (what students don't?). However, I plan on opening up this project to any interested student at our school of 800+ kids.
My Project
I am involved with a local community-run LP FM radio station. I would like for my students to have the opportunity to produce science/environmental-related 1-5 minute long pieces for air on the radio station and for archiving on a Soundcloud page. Think of them as audio flash cards.
Beyond the aspect of reinforcing science ideas, I feel that my students would greatly benefit from exposure to practices of writing and producing new-media.
Students will be able to more deeply learn the content as they translate their research into informative audio content. They will additionally practice their writing and journalistic skills
The equipment:
Chromebook - necessary for recording, editing, and uploading our recordings.
Audio Technica Microphones/Cables/Stands - necessary for recording of voice overs.
Zoom Recorder - necessary for field recording and out of studio interview
I feel this project could result in a long-term interest in audio productions for my students.
They will internalize the scientific content in a meaningful way and have fun producing radio.
This will also serve as a fabulous community engagement piece, as the entire city will be able to hear the students' work.
I would like to expand this project beyond my classroom to the entire school, perhaps starting a Radio Club, where students could practice the art of audio journalism.
