it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
It is never too young to start teaching students the importance of caring for animals and teaching them compassion. I have been able to expose my students to our classroom pet tortoise and have learned how to care for our pet. Students are so excited to help feed and look after her. By having a classroom pet I show my students how to gentle with pets and discourage rough handling. I am able to teach students to recognize our pet's body language, such as when they are happy, scared, or annoyed. This will help students to see the world through the eyes of another living thing.
Our classroom pet needs a better home!
Having a well set up habitat will teach students the animal's basic needs. Students will understand that animals require many things to live a great life. By having a classroom pet I can also have discussions about all animals in need and volunteer at our local animal shelter. This will teach my students compassion and how we can work towards alleviating suffering in others. Knowing how to set up the tortoise habitat with the enclosure, flooring, feeding station, and enrichment opportunities will be no easy task and students will learn so much. Seeing and observing how my students interact with our classroom pet will be a great way to measure their understanding of compassion.
