My students need a form of assistive technology, such as a Nook, to be able to easily access and master skills that have been taught and reviewed in class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It is evident that students learn best and retain information when they are having fun. I am asking that my students have a classroom nook where they will be able to build upon their skills in a meaningful way.
My students are a very excited group of 6th graders who are the youngest grade in our 6th-12th grade middle school/high school.
The class is mixed with both general education and special education students. They already know so much about technology and I would love to add to their excitement while teaching them through using popular technology. The opportunities will be endless if they had a classroom nook. They will be able to read independently or in a group, they will be able to listen to a book on tape using headphones, or they could even record their own voice and listen to their own fluency. There are many apps that can be downloaded to the nook to help students with other aspects of their reading and writing. There are many effective apps to help students with their grammar, decoding, reading comprehension, and fluency to say the least. If this energetic bunch of eager students were able to have this classroom nook, they would appreciate and learn so much in a fun way.
My Project
The classroom nook would be a great asset to the class in many ways. Students would be able to learn now to use a new innovative piece of technology to power their learning. They will learn independence. I would be able to assess the students using Fontas and Pinnel leveling and download books or short stories on their reading level to enhance their reading. I will also be able to use the nook with my after school book club. They could take turns reading off of the nook. The students will become comfortable with reading not only on paperbacks but reading off of electronics. It is very unlikely that many of my students would be able to own a nook of their own, so having one in the class that they can use might be their only chance to get acclimated with reading and getting assistance through applications that can be downloaded to assist them. Students will gain the confidence to read and have fun while doing it, which will last a lifetime.
My students already know that reading is important and essential to success in life, however showing them that a nook has been donated to their classroom by people other than their teachers, because these people also care about their education will be powerful for the students.
They will not only be genuinely grateful but they will read more than they do not out of sheer excitement to take turns reading on the nook.
