I teach second grade at a Title 1 school in Silicon Valley. Over 50% of the students at my school receive free or reduced lunch. Next year, our class sizes are increasing from 20 to 30 because of budget cuts.
Second grade is a big year for students to start learning how to become independent.
One way I foster this is by giving students cubbies, where they help me put homework, school fliers, classwork, and other items they bring to school, but is a distraction, so they must keep it in their cubby. They love having a place to keep their things in the classroom, and it is a safety precaution for me, because they do not have to keep leaving the classroom to go outside into their backpacks to put something away. It's a quick walk to their cubby, and then back to their seat. The current cubbies I have are up on a counter, making the small kids in my class struggle to reach their cubby if they have one in the top 2 rows. They also cannot see their name on the cubby.
My Project
Next year I will have 10 extra bodies in my classroom. The current cubby system I have in my class only has enough space for 25 cubbies and is made of cardboard, with each compartment being the size of a kids shoe box. The new cubby compartment I am requesting hold 30 cubby compartments, is made of wood, and has wheels. The wheels not only make it easy to move, but also puts the cubbies on the floor-making it easier for students to access. The size of the compartment is also bigger, giving the students more room for their belongings, and will keep papers flat.
By you donating to my project, you will help me prepare for the class size increase for the 2010-2011 school year.
Classroom space and supplies are a concern for next year, and these new cubbies are one step to help me get ready. Thank you!!
