This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second-grade teacher in a New York City public school in the Bronx. I am new to my school, and the rug that my students meet on several times a day desperately needs to be replaced.
We meet on the rug during math for a mini lesson before the students return to their seats for the remainder of each lesson. We also meet on the rug again during shared reading and at least one more time for read aloud. In addition, we use the carpet for classroom community meetings.
As you can see, this rug is very important since it is the focal point of instruction and our classroom community. Our current rug is stained, dirty and breaking around the rims. It also has a big square cut out of one side. It would be so much more appropriate for the students to meet on an appealing, attractive, and clean rug.
No one would want their children sitting on a rug like ours every day. My students shouldn't have to do so just because our school is a public school in the Bronx.
