My Project

In my first grade classroom at a Title I school, many of my students face daily challenges outside of the classroom that can cause stress and anxiety. For some of them, school is the most consistent and calming part of their day. Because of this, it’s incredibly important to create a welcoming, peaceful, and engaging learning environment where every child feels safe, supported, and excited to learn.

The items in my DonorsChoose cart—classroom decor, lighting, student rewards, and essential working materials—are more than just supplies; they are tools that will help transform our classroom into a space that nurtures emotional well-being and academic growth.

Calming lighting and decor will help create a soothing atmosphere, reducing overstimulation and helping students stay focused and calm. Bright, harsh overhead lights can be distracting and overwhelming, especially for young learners who may already struggle with attention or anxiety. A more inviting and comfortable space can help students feel more at ease and ready to engage in learning.

Classroom prizes and reward items serve as positive reinforcements that motivate students to make good choices, try their best, and feel proud of their accomplishments. Many of my students thrive on encouragement and recognition, and having a small incentive system in place goes a long way in building confidence and classroom community.

Finally, basic working materials—like writing tools, organizational items, and hands-on resources—ensure that all students have what they need to succeed. In a classroom where resources are limited, having enough materials for everyone means that no child is left behind or feels unprepared.
