Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a Title 5 school, which means all students receive free breakfast and lunch because of their parent's income (or lack of income). My school is ethnically diverse, in order words they are "minorities." However, there is nothing minor about them.
My students have many interests from soccer, swimming, gymnastics, gardening and more.
School is more interesting to them if they can make connections to the curriculum. They are more engaged and often use higher level thinking when they enjoy what they are doing.
My Project
I was an administrator who decided to return to my first love; and that is being a classroom teacher in middle school. Being that I've been out of the classroom for more six years, I no longer have a classroom library.
It's my goal to build a classroom library that my students are able to relate.
A library students can make connections; a classroom library that's engaging.
Students reading goal is 10 or more books for the school year. Students will complete a book review for each book read.
The school media center is no longer accessible to students because it's now being used as a classroom. Many students do not have a public library cards. A classroom library will helpful.
COVID has limited student access to physical books and textbooks. Very few novels are available as a PDF. Many students still like the feel of books in their hands. Some have complain of headaches from being on computer screens for six or more hours.
To be safe, books will be quarantined for 72 hours to keep students from contracting COVID through usage of books.
More than half of students from low‑income households
