Reading is such an innate part of our every day life. Most kids come to school with no opportunities to read at home. They have not been exposed to great literary works, nor do they want to be. I want to create an atmosphere where my students can come and learn to love reading as much as I do.
I teach 6th grade Language Arts.
Our school is different than most, because it is just 6th and 7th grades. They are great students who try hard to succeed in everything they do. Some students come from homes where this is hard. Some come from enriched home lives. Our school community is one of teamwork. We strive to teach our students to do their best every day, and to help those around them do their best as well.
My Project
Have you ever been to a library and the only book you wanted to check out was already taken? Plus, there was a waiting list! This happens all the time. Unfortunately this can discourage kids from trying to read. Every day when class starts, my students come in and have to silent read for 15 minutes. This helps them calm down and focus.

By having a classroom library available to them, they will be able to do this better. They will be able to read books that are hard to get in the school library because they are usually checked out. Having books available for kids when they need them is important to their literary success!
Being a new teacher, there are not many resources available to build a great classroom library.
This project will improve my classroom by helping me create a positive environment for literary growth. I didn't start reading until I found a book that I loved, and I branched out from there. I'm hoping to provide books that will do that for my students. Every child needs to have a love for reading. School would be easier, and more achievable; students could go farther in life if they loved reading!
