Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Scholars at my school come from a large array of feeder schools. We have students reading at Kindergarten level and those who are reading at closer to college level. Some of our students are highly engaged, even highly motivated, and quite a lot of our students are already "checking out" in a way that illustrates the disconnect they feel between interests, goals, life, school, and success.
Our scholars are largely native to Northeast Los Angeles and have faced an array of restrictions and traumas.
Our scholars must succeed despite a significant lack of basic supports. Our scholars want a safe, professional, and motivating environment when they arrive at the school since this is the only real respite they have from pressures of the street and sometimes, even, realities at home.
Most importantly, many of our scholars have not yet had experiences where they feel pride and ownership of their schooling and class work. We have on our site, every day, opportunities to give young scholars opportunities to change this and to really engage with their dreams, interests, and possible futures.
My Project
Our small, public, neighborhood school lacks a library on-site, and many of our students do not maintain a library card, let alone visit the library. I am looking to boost my in-class library with a load of high-interest and low-difficulty books and graphic novels that will get our "non-readers" browsing the shelves and learning through graphic novels and stories they can really sink their teeth into. Not only this, I want to acquire sets of 4 of some of these books so that students can choose them in teams for our Literature Circles in English Language Arts class.
These materials will significantly help our scholars learn to love to dive into reading as they see just how many and what a wide range of books are available for them to select from.
Rather than having me hand select books for them to check out of our classroom library, I want a large quantity of high interest books clearly available for students to select and checkout. Helping students become active and curious independent readers is one of the main reasons I've been in the classroom for 6 years, now, and counting!
So many of our students need to increase their independent reading abilities, and further to reclassify from "English Language Learners." A hearty, healthy, and readily available access to books is one critical step in this process. More than this, though, some of our scholars need only to see their friends getting excited about checking out and devouring books from our in-class library is sure to boost their interest through "fear of missing out," especially if their friends are organizing literature circles and reading partnerships. This order of books is sure to break open the floodgates for some of our young and hesitant scholars to become eager and assertive readers.
