Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach young children in a low social-economic area in Miami Gardens. I teach in a reverse mainstream special education setting. Students in my classroom have varying disabilities including developmental delays, autism, communication delays, neurodevelopmental disorders and cognitive disabilities to name a few.
In my classroom I make sure to provide all students with the opportunity to learn through differentiated, hands-on developmentally appropriate lessons that help them meet their developmental and academic needs.
Over the years, I have seen all of my students strive to learn and make great progress by making sure that I create a positive classroom environment that caters to their needs.
My Project
Every year I strive to promote literacy in our classroom by making sure that all students feel represented and can connect to the books we read. Through dialogic reading strategies, students enhance their communication skills, language comprehension and reading comprehension through books that are relevant and diverse.
For this project, books listed will help build our classroom library to represent African American students in in our classroom as we discuss acceptance and current events.
As students engage in social-emotional activities in the classroom they can further extend lessons learned through books and interact with their peers to create an inclusive environment.
