This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a first year, first grade teacher that just graduated in the Spring. Our school is a Preschool through 6th grade community school with a 50/50 Dual Language Immersion strand in K-6th. As I begin to get into my very first classroom, I want to create a classroom library for my first graders since reading is such an important factor of first grade. Like I mentioned, my school is part of a 50/50 Dual Language Immersion strand which means I need books in Spanish as well. Having books in Spanish will allow my students to further their academic vocabulary while learning a second language.
My goal for this project is to provide books in Spanish for my classroom library because that will allow me to provide equal resources in both languages.
It is very important to show the importance of both languages hence we are a 50/50 DLI program.
Our student population is about 620+. We are 75% Latinos, 10% Black, 10% White, and the remainder a mix of Asian, Filipino, Pacific Islander or two or more races. 92% of our families are socioeconomically disadvantaged and we struggle with 51% chronic absenteeism. Our students should all feel equal when it comes to the supplies and resources that are provided for them because they are all important and special.
I appreciate you for taking the time to read a bit about our story. Thank you in advance!
