This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach a very unique group of students in a low-income community. I have been teaching the Gifted and Advanced elementary sections in my school for 20 years! I primarily teach fourth and fifth grade students Reading and Language Arts throughout a two year span. They come into my room in fourth grade and then complete their fifth grade reading program with me as well. I love this setup because I find I have a very high impact on student engagement and learning. Our classroom becomes a very tightknit group of readers that work and learn together. There is one small problem, our students read a lot! That means that I have a high turnover of books being checked out of my classroom library as well as a need to replenish these books with new copies or new sets often. I often spend the $300.00 state limit for teaching supplies on these materials, but I am finding that this amount just doesn't cover the constant need for new books.
