Classroom Library One (Please Help Inner City Kids!)
My female students need books that will interest them that they can read independently, in literature circles, and at home, both this coming school year and in years that follow.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you could truly make a direct difference in the lives of children, would you do so? I teach 8th grade Language Arts in an urban setting where the obstacles that I face are more than an educator faces in most other academic environments.
One of the biggest problems I face is motivating students to read. Most of our students are already reading well below grade level and those who are, are usually not up to par because they are living in homes where English is a second language. That’s not their fault. The more one hears English at home, the more familiar they are with it. Period. And that’s simply most of my students’ situations. And in order to remedy this, it is best to get these students to read as much as possible to raise both their reading levels and writing skills. While my classroom library’s quantity of books is respectful, the quality of them is sorely lacking. Too many of the books are not those that students would be interested in, fascinated by, or inspired from. Many are not contemporary, nor relevant to them and their lives. Yes we do read books as a whole class on a daily basis that open their eyes to other worlds, books from all times and of all genres. But we need more than that.
I need other books, truly high-interest level books, to supplement that core reading. I need these for students to read independently in class, to read in literature circles, and at other times to take home where they can lay down, enchanted by the words that they read on the pages before them. For my female students, the Chicken Soup books are some of the best books I could ask for. With the few Chicken Soup books that I do have, my female students typically dive right in, head first. They are relevant to them and aren't just wholesome tales to smile at, but ones my students tend to truly think about, and at times, takes nuggets of wisdom from and share with fellow students. And I need more of them. For my independent reading projects that my students complete once every marking period, these books would be a tremendous asset. They would offer my students a wide variety of Chicken Soup books from ones on friendships, to ones on love and relationships, and almost everything in between.
If you could help with a donation, I and my students would be more than grateful--I'll be sure to send thank you letters and photos next school year to prove it. So please help us. Help my students. I feel no shame when I ask and in fact beg you for your donations. I am thoroughly confident that your donations will go a long way in changing my student’s lives both next year and for years to follow. Through your donations, I will be able to provide my students with a wide selection of books to choose from and read with enthusiasm. I will be able to get these students to want to read. And in doing so, I will help these students become better readers, and in turn better writers, thus preparing them for high school and a more fruitful life to follow. Please help me. Help them. I am begging you.
