My students need a classroom library which will provide a variety of books at different levels and comfortable seating so that all of my students can enjoy.
51 energetic second graders buzz in and around my classroom every day searching for the perfect spot to read their "Just Right" books. Often this scenario becomes complicated when I am unable to provide students with a variety of books and locations to do this.
My students attend a Title I school with 90% free and reduced lunch and 93% minority students.
We are a Focus school which means that we have low achievement in Math and Reading. In an attempt to achieve more success in Reading our school has switched to a reading workshop model which allows us the framework to meet the needs of all of our students no matter what reading level that they are at. In this model students are given an opportunity to grow as readers by reading books at the levels that they are at. My students love being able to choose the books that they want to read believe giving them choice gets them more excited about reading. They can't wait to check out new books and they don't groan when I announce independent reading time. However, recent budget constraints and the local economy have limited my ability to provide the necessary resources to support this model.
My Project
By enhancing my classroom library with more books at a variety of levels, I will be able to provide more opportunities to match my students up with "Just Right" books. I can differentiate instruction more because my students will be able to practice reading skills that I have taught in class without the frustration of struggling over the words. Having a more expansive library will allow students to have opportunities to check out books to take home since many of them have no access to books at home. Research shows that out-of-school reading habits of students has shown that even 15 minutes a day of independent reading can expose students to more than a million words of text in a year.
With an improved classroom library my students will be able to enjoy the true experience of Reader's Workshop.
They will have more access to great books both in the classroom and at home. Ultimately, your donation will help my students grow as readers and foster an enjoyment of reading which will positively impact their ability to be able to read on or above grade level throughout school.
