My class consists of a seven students with autism. My students have varying levels of ability in cognition, communication, and social interaction.
I would like to provide them with a classroom library that would be specific to their learning needs. Students with autism often learn best through a multi-sensory approach. I would like to give my students the opportunity to experience reading by not only listening and looking but by getting actively involved. My students would greatly benefit from a listening center which they could use independently, books with story props so they can "touch" the characters and act out the story with classmates, comfy chairs that provide them a feeling of security as they read, and of course, access to GREAT CHILDREN'S LITERATURE.
This library would provide my students with countless literacy, communication, and social experiences everyday through books. Many children with autism have a difficult time finding leisure activities that they love. Acquiring a love of books and reading could bring my students a lifetime of pleasure!
