This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our scholars come from the Latinx community of East Los Angeles. Many of them are bilingual like their caregivers and community members. They are intelligent, kind, funny, and vibrant individuals who reflect the communal outlook on life that originates in their homes and heritage. Classroom libraries are a powerful way help students build a strong literacy foundation and a love of reading, which our scholars are in the process of developing.

My Project

I am a first-year middle school teacher in East Los Angeles, hoping to build my classroom library! I'm very excited to meet 154 scholars in 8th grade this semester. At our school, we have a "Drop Everything And Read" (DEAR) program as well as Accelerated Reading (AR) designed to make reading a part of daily practice for scholars (& staff) even during remote learning! Our school has implemented creative ways to ensure scholars have books like drive-thru libraries and drop-offs! I'm very fortunate to work with dedicated colleagues. All of us will continue to read from home!

For many families, having home libraries is not a financial possibility, so classrooms can be that space (that second home) to ensure that scholars have everything they need to read, think, and grow.
