Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school in Salt Lake City, UT where 97% of our students qualify for free & reduced lunch. Over 75% of my students are English Language Learners. This past year languages spoken in my students' homes included Spanish, Burmese, Hakha Chin, Mele, Tongan, Swahili, Somali, and Navajo. Some of my students' families have been in the U.S. for generations, while others are newly arrived immigrant and refugee families from all over the world. For the past two years, I have taught in one of the school district's inclusion classrooms. This means that the focus is on inclusion for students of all different ability levels and learning needs (both special, general, and English language education) in a setting that meets those needs on a unique, individual basis.

Despite some obvious differences, ALL of my students have a love for learning and an innate sense of compassion and empathy.

I am blown away daily by their ability to show up over and over with the same enthusiasm for learning and inquisitive nature towards life. I am also transformed by their kindness and concern for not only those in the classroom community but the greater world.

My Project

The goal for this project is to continue to foster the love of reading that my students have. Many students do not have access to many books at home nor do I always have easy access to books for them. Our current classroom library consists of many generous used book donations. We are very grateful for those and the students love them, however, they are not all specific to student interests or the various reading levels in our special education inclusion classroom. The hope is that by selecting books that come in series and sets, students will find some that they love and be excited to pick up the next book!

The love of reading will open many doors for my students and I cannot stress enough how important it is to surround them with these books in their very own classroom.
