“The greatest gift is a passion for reading," Elizabeth Hardwick said. This is what I am trying to give each of my students.
The 25 students in my class are extremely diverse.
They represent a wide range of cultures and speak five different languages. Their parents primarily work at a university; therefore, education is a priority. Their reading abilities vary greatly from just grasping letter-sound relationships to reading beginner chapter books. Therefore, my classroom library has to be diverse in books available to reach these wide range of students.
My Project
Durable metal bookcases--over the years, I've invested in many books for our classroom library because I believe that by providing a large selection of books is the best way to encourage students to read. However, the bookcases I currently have in our classrooms are wood and falling apart. The top shelves on them are duct taped to keep them up. These durable bookcases will help ensure the safety of my students, while they enjoy reading.
Carpet--our classroom library area is a meeting place for us each morning as well as for read alouds and writing lessons. Students are currently cramped in a small space and have trouble maintaining each others' personal space. This carpet will help enlarge the area and give students a carpet square of their own.
The classroom library is the center of our classroom.
It is overflowing with books; however, these books need a home worth their weight. We need sturdy bookcases that can support these books and a cozy place to curl up to read or to meet as a whole class.
