Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a kindergarten teacher my job is to make sure that at the end of the day students are eager to return the next day to school with a smile. Working at a Title One School and having a diverse population of english language learners and special needs can be a challenge, so it is my job to establish a community of learners that are eager to help one another.

I want to read an interesting book, so can you help me find one, said one of my students as I made an effort to sort through the books in good condition in the classroom. Upon my arrival to my new school I realized that the students were interested in the classroom library but the selection was poor and the area was a mess. After cleaning the area I noticed how the students wanted to read. I also learned that some of the students were fluent readers. As a result I realized that it is essential that I increase my classroom library to ensure that my readers are motivated to read daily.

A selection of books would encourage the students to visit the classroom library and read both at home and in the classroom.

I have witnessed the interest students have when I purchase a new book and read it to the class. Once I am done reading all of the students raise their hand to request to take the book home. Inspiring and motivating students to read in kindergarten is one of my many goals.
