This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teaching international students intimidated me at first, but as soon as I met their sweet smiles I instantly knew teaching them was the perfect fit for me. My classes have students from over fifteen countries and they speak many languages. They are all enthusiastic to be learning in America and excited for their new opportunities. I have become close to my students by learning about their experiences throughout their short lives, and it puts my life into a clearer perspective.
Despite their many daily challenges, they are passionate to learn.
They love to read in English and are getting into exploring new genres and series. They are eager to learn about American culture while sharing theirs. We all teach each other a lot about being human and simply being kind and accepting to one another. These students have taught me more about the world and people than I could have ever imagined.
My Project
I have a classroom library that is full of books at all reading levels for English Language Learners. I get many of my books by donation, however I have brought a lot from my home. As my students learn more and more English they are getting more interested in reading in English. They enjoy the classics, but also love new and adventurous genres such as Manga and poetry by Ellen Hopkins.
Having books in my students' hands warms my heart.
They ask to take them home to read on the train or on their sofas. My goal is to find a genre that each student enjoys and have them become a little more passionate about reading each year. If students requests books and I do not have them it makes me feel guilty that I cannot provide them with the books of their desires. That's why I'm here. These books on this list are all chosen by my students. I hope that with your help we can have the books of their choice in their hands. Reading is become a big culture in my classroom and I want it to continue to spread.
