My Students
My students are struggling readers and writers from diverse backgrounds. With a large population of Special Education students integrated into my general education classes, it's crucial that my classroom library is accessible for all my students. They are inquisitive, creative, and unique but reluctant to engage.
They struggle to find characters in literature that they connect with; that they see themselves in.
They want to learn and grow as readers and writers they just struggle with how to get started.
My Project
It is VITAL that we work to help our students be ANTI-RACIST. One of the best places to start is in the classroom and it is imperative that our students have access to literature that encourages that. I want the books on my bookshelves to foster that anti-racist mindset. I want my students to see themselves on the shelves of our classroom library. I want students to be exposed to the perspectives of their classmates. The books requested in this project will help us have more choices and diversity in our classroom library.
They will help represent a population of students who have been underrepresented in literature for generations.
The books represent the variety of students and their varying ability levels. I hope to surround my students with a library that fosters both intellectual discussion and respectful discourse.
