By teaching my students to love animals I will help them to be nurturing, kind, caring and compassionate human beings.
My students love animals!
Throughout the year they are most excited about lessons that teach about living things in the world around them. We visit the farm for a field trip each year and many students say this is their favorite part of kindergarten. Our community is made up of apartments and houses with small yards so many students have never had the chance to experience animals beyond the common household pet. My hope with this project is to teach children how to nurture and care for these eggs and watch them hatch into amazing little chicks that we can love!
My Project
I would like to implement this project into our farm unit which is a part of our district curriculum. I plan to teach them about the lifestyle of the duck and how they eggs need love and care to hatch. We will create a lifecycle chart as a class and individually. We also complete a prediction graph where the students will guess how many days the eggs will take to hatch. We will use the candelar to look into the eggs and watch the progression of the embryos. We will create observation logs to track their growth. Once hatched we will take turns feeding, watering and caring for the baby ducks. Once they are old enough, we will take a class field trip to release the ducks into Lake Murray, a community lake that is very close to our school.
